Association Between Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs and Antibiotic Use Globally: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
SUMMARY
This global report analyzed the association between antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) implemented across multiple healthcare settings and antibiotic usage. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 52 studies with more than 1.7 million patients found that ASPs were generally associated with a reduction in antibiotic prescribing and antibiotic consumption in both hospital and non-hospital settings. ASPs were also associated with reduced consumption of antibiotics on the WHO Watch List.
