Global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) — the “silent pandemic” — is already causing a significant burden on healthcare systems, with COVID-19 only adding to the complexity and challenge of this global public health threat. In the United States in 2020, the rate of AMR-associated deaths and infections increased by 15% as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking actions to curb AMR, including the use of rapid diagnostics to inform prescribing practices and greater investment in surveillance data, is vital for improving antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and combating resistance.
