Impact of an antibiotic stewardship program on antibiotic utilization, bacterial susceptibilities, and cost of antibiotics
SUMMARY
A group of researchers sought to assess the impact of implementing an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) in An-Najah National University Hospital on antibiotic consumption and the cost of antibiotic expenditure. They compared data for patients who received one or more targeted antibiotics (meropenem, colistin and tigecycline) during a 20-month period prior to the implementation of the ASP to a 17-month period after implementation. Study results showed a statistically significant reduction in days of therapy for all three antimicrobials and a 55.5% decrease in mean cost of the three antibiotics in the post-ASP phase.
