Change of Plans: Overview of Bacterial Taxonomy, Recent Changes of Medical Importance, and Potential Areas of Impact
SUMMARY
The current bacterial nomenclature landscape is complex and ever-changing with the introduction of advanced sequencing technologies and changes in how microorganisms are grouped and associated. Researchers must regularly update bacterial nomenclature to improve accuracy and consistency in microbial language. When adopting changes, it is critical to consider the impact this may have across disciplines, including the microbiology laboratory, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention teams, and information services. This article gives an interesting overview of bacterial nomenclature key changes and challenges, and describes how this complex process needs the help of all microbiology and clinical stakeholders to effectively support multidisciplinary guidelines and streamlined implementation updates.
