Policy Brief: Global Research Agenda for Antimicrobial Resistance in Human Health

SUMMARY

The global nature of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a worldwide, coordinated approach to both research and data sharing in order to make lasting progress. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) published its inaugural agenda outlining the top research priorities in eleven AMR areas that need to be addressed by 2030. After reviewing 3,000 documents published over the last decade, and identifying “2,000 unanswered questions or knowledge gaps,” a group of AMR experts gave priority to 40 research topics across five themes with the greatest impact on mitigating AMR in the human health sector, in accordance with the Global Action Plan. The report recognizes the need to invest in multiple strategies to successfully fight AMR, including antibiotic drug discovery, rapid diagnostics, infection prevention measures, and the collection of data about resistance trends through surveillance.
