CO2 emissions: bioMérieux is switching to renewable energy

Initiated 15 years ago at our Grenoble site in France, the integration of photovoltaic panels on our sites has accelerated over the past five years to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

We adopted a Climate strategy in 2015, revised in 2021, with an ambition to accelerate the reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions.

Such an ambition requires a major action plan to decarbonize our energy supply, in particular. Among the measures implemented over the past 10 years, photovoltaic panels were installed by six bioMérieux entities, covering up to 20% of power consumption in some cases.

5,000 m² of photovoltaic shades covering the site's parking lots are being installed! This project will make it possible to produce 1 GWh per year, i.e., nearly 20% of the site's annual power consumption, but also to enhance the quality of life at work by improving the comfort of employees, who will be able to park their vehicles in covered spaces.

Since December 2009, part of the electrical power needed at the North American facility in Durham has been provided by 2,000 m2 of solar panels. This initiative allows the site to produce 150,000 kWh annually.

The roof of the bioMérieux Australia-New Zealand site has been fitted with solar panels to take advantage of Sydney's 300 days of sunshine. This 460m2 installation will offset part of the site's electrical power consumption.

1300 m2 of solar panels were installed and connected at the end of December on the site's lawns, pending a second phase in 2021 involving the future extension of IDC 2040. Consumed directly on site, the generated kWh will cover 12% of the facility's power requirements.

Over 5,000 m² of solar panels cover more than 400 parking spaces at BioFire Diagnostics’ new building. These panels produce 1.3 megawatts of electrical power, or about 10% of the site's annual consumption!

65 m² of solar panels were installed at the end of 2017 on the roofs of the site (Applied Maths Belgium). The site encourages the use of electric or hybrid cars and has installed charging stations for the vehicles of its employees (and of nearby residents, who will be billed for the consumed electrical power). Today, these panels cover about a quarter of the site's total power consumption.

Installed in 2005, 100 m² of solar panels on the roofs of the Grenoble site have been producing part of the site's electricity needs every year since then (18.5 MWh of electricity in 2020).
