Advancing the Global AMR Agenda: A Call for Multi-Sector Collaboration

On the sidelines of the 2024 United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a multisectoral event titled “Advancing Together: Securing the Global AMR Agenda by Harnessing the Collective Strength of Multi-Sector Partnerships” took place on September 24 in New York. bioMérieux, in partnership with The Wellcome Trust, The American Society of Microbiology, The Republics of Malawi and France, organized the event to focus on fostering a collaborative ecosystem that establishes sustainable solutions across the entire AMR landscape. From diagnosis and treatment to surveillance and action plans, this initiative spanned human health, animals, and the environment.

The event drew over 170 leaders in AMR and public health from diverse sectors, including governments, civil society, patients and patient organizations, academia, and the private sector. Remarks were delivered by representatives from patient organizations, investors, and leadership from multilateral organizations such as the FAO, Quadripartite, Africa CDC, and World Bank. Each highlighted their contributions and collaborative efforts to advance the fight against AMR.

Dame Sally Davies, Special Envoy on AMR for the United Kingdom Government, underscored the need for systematic and transformational change through partnership. “Action to date does not match the scale of the problem. We have to have a plan for collective and collaborative action, a commitment to embrace change and partnership. I call on you all to make that commitment.

Lori Russell, Senior Vice President for Public and Government Affairs and Compliance at bioMérieux, highlighted that “Achieving the ambitious goals set out in the UN Declaration requires collective action. As the health and finance sectors shift their focus from awareness to action, it’s crucial to explore how stakeholders can collaborate and leverage their collective advantage to enable the country-level change necessary for achieving global targets.

As it is now time to implement the recommendations from the UN Declaration, bioMérieux stands ready to work with all stakeholders to improve public health and address AMR by ensuring stewardship plans are inclusive of diagnostics and by strengthening access to and utilization of diagnostics for all patients.
