With E-Resale, bioMérieux innovates by giving a second life to its instruments
Launched last July, starting with Africa and Middle East, the E-Resale platform allows to purchase and sell second-hand bioMérieux instruments for clinical applications. This is an innovative offer in the field of circular economy and a first on the in vitro diagnostics market.
We knew about second-hand resale for clothes or cars. Thanks to bioMérieux, it is now available for diagnostic instruments! The principle of E-Resale is simple. The site is an online marketplace in which distributors and direct customers can purchase second-hand instruments in a secure manner, from a certified reseller, Diamond Diagnostics.
How does it work?
The platform is hosted by bioMérieux, and is freely accessible from our corporate website biomerieux.com. Thanks to E-Resale, bioMérieux connects its customers with its partner, Diamond Diagnostics. This U.S. company, specializing in the purchase and resale of second-hand equipment, ensures the preventive maintenance of instruments before their resale on the platform, according to a quality process developed by bioMérieux. Our teams handle the installation of instruments purchased on E-Resale as if they were new equipment, together with managing the customer service and sale of reagents.
“The second-hand market is complementary to that of new and refurbished equipment*. Second-hand products are not guaranteed, but buyers can choose to enter a standard service contract with the bioMérieux subsidiary to which they are attached and benefit from a 30-day return policy from Diamond Diagnostics upon receipt of the instrument, in case of defect or damage during shipping. Everything is done to satisfy the customer”, specified Paul Boularan, Global Market Manager of E-Resale.
This platform is open to instruments in the maturity stage, still marketed, and technically supported by bioMérieux; the products recently launched or at end of life are therefore excluded. Products of our three areas of expertise – immunoassays, microbiology and molecular biology – are available on E-Resale, in the clinical field exclusively.
E-Resale is a public platform, but only bioMérieux customers located in countries that benefit from this offer can view prices and place an order.
The commercial launch of the platform will take place in several stages, starting in Africa and Middle East regions, with an extended rollout by 2026.
An innovation with a sustainable focus
With E-Resale, bioMérieux is the first company in the in vitro diagnostics sector to implement concrete measures to develop and structure the circular economy market for its products. “The ambition is both societal and environmental,” emphasized Edward Marks, Associate Program Director, co-founder of the project. “E-Resale is part of our public health mission because it aims to facilitate access to diagnostics in developing countries, in a fully secure and trustworthy way. Furthermore, extending the lifespan of our systems contributes to a more sustainable approach.”
* Refurbished bioMérieux instruments are second-hand products reconditioned by sites approved by bioMérieux. They hold a refurbishing certificate and are associated with a bioMérieux warranty.
