Urinary Tract Infections

Common ailments like urinary tract infections (UTIs) have become much harder to treat due to resistant bacteria. Our solutions not only offer rapid identification of UTIs, but susceptibility tests combined with expert interpretation software capable of identifying resistant mechanisms.

Are Urinary Tract Infections a problem?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections in the clinical environment. Most UTIs are caused by Gram-negative bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli or species of KlebsiellaProteusPseudomonas, or Enterobacter, although other strains, such as Staphlyococcus and Serratia, are emerging1. Although UTIs are usually uncomplicated and can be treated with a short course of antibiotics, they can be painful and recurrent.

Moreover, UTIs are involved in up to 40% of healthcare-associated infections (HAI), principally due to catheter use2. UTIs are increasingly caused by drug-resistant bacteria, making it especially important to identify the pathogen involved and resistance mechanisms, to effectively orient antibiotic therapy.

In the United States alone, UTI-related symptoms lead to almost 10 million office visits and around 3 million emergency visits each year. In the UK, 1%–3% of all medical consultations are due to UTIs. It is the second most common reason for prescribing antibiotics in the UK.3

What challenges are labs facing with respect to UTIs?

Urine represents the main and biggest sample volume in the microbiology labs. Streamlined lab workflow is critical to handle the large amount of volume every day.  Plus, patient care is reliant on rapid results and accurate reporting from the lab.

Ultimately, it is crucial that labs of all sizes implement cost effective solutions offering optimized workflow that not only reduce the amount of handling steps but reduce the time to accurate result to improve antimicrobial stewardship worldwide.

How can bioMérieux help with UTI Management?

What if your lab could accelerate identification (ID) / antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and report actionable results to clinicians for better patient management?

bioMérieux offers a full urinary tract infection diagnostic solution to meet the needs of your lab, small or large.

Our solution addresses the main challenges by offering:

  • Optimized workflow by reducing handling steps throughout the process and automated unloading of negative cultures
  • High Productivity for faster results in comparison to routine workflow with high throughput, automation, and integration
  • Clear identification; improved detection of mixed urine cultures
  • Rapid AST and MIC for personalized treatment
  • Advanced result rules-based expertise to provide clinicians with optimal information, with real-time alerts on MDRO and reporting on potential HAIs

Depending on your needs, key features of our UTI Solution include:

  • 20% reduced turnaround time (TAT) with direct ID of E coli. with CHROMID® CPS ELITE4
  • Throughput up to 150 urine specimens/hour with continuous loading from WASP®
  • WASPLab®’s Early reading 12h protocol with CHROMID® CPSE plate
  • Automated sorting of plates and autorelease of results with PhenoMATRIX® Plus
  • Automated selection of isolated colonies to automatize the picking with Colibri™ system
