Augmented Diagnostics - the bioMérieux Approach that combines the best of machines and people for the benefit of food safety

3mn read.

Augmented Diagnostics ; Two words that represent a real revolution in food safety and therefore the food industry.

This revolutionary approach was developed in bioMérieux's laboratories located in the headquarter in Lyon, France during 2020-2021. It was designed to meet the challenges of the future of "food safety" as described by the Blue Print of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the influential American agency for food and drug products. The FDA is responsible for the study, control and regulation of health-related products prior to their release into the market. (This regulatory body has recently tightened regulations, placing more pressure at global level and forcing companies’ R&D departments to demonstrate new levels of creativity)

The benchmark approach to food safety in the early 21st century

Faced with this challenge, a new approach was born, which combines traditional solutions with the latest cutting-edge technology, both digital and artificial intelligence tools merging bioinformatics and genomics with consulting and expertise. It's a global approach that has rapidly gained recognition worldwide. Using this unique, tailor-made and rapid approach, a hygienic environment such as a factory or laboratory can be comprehensively surveyed and analysed by a combination of people and technology, anticipating any future crises in food safety. Objectives: to hunt down pathogens and anticipate crises, but also to avoid food waste, excessive use of chemical products and water wastage through inappropriate cleaning processes. The end result allows savings in quality, time and finance, and a commitment to the challenges of feeding the world's population at the start of the 21st century.

Experts from a wide range of backgrounds

Two years after being recognised by the Food Safety Innovation Award in 2022, Augmented Diagnostics continues to evolve, and every day provides further proof of its reliability and efficiency, thanks to an additional team of around twenty world-renowned experts with a wide range of profiles and backgrounds: microbiologists, data scientists and molecular biology engineers. Leading companies are already using this approach: Coopérative d'Isigny Saint-Mère, Laita in France, Coca-Cola in Greece.

Competitors are present, but there is renewed leadership for bioMérieux

While competitors in the food safety market are also endeavouring to offer their own solutions, such as genomics services, environmental monitoring softwares and data modelling - bioMérieux's approach remains the one and only global strategy on the world market. This leadership is demonstrated by the company's strong participation in the Microorc project, part of the European Horizon program dedicated to research and innovation, as well as at major trade shows such as the Anuga FoodTech in Cologne. Among the reasons for this deployment is the efficiency of bioMérieux, a leading company in the diagnostics sector for 60 years, and the affordable cost of the offer: a customer who wishes to investigate the root cause of a contamination using our experts (investigation and consulting) will pay around 20k€. For a global approach including an instrument directly on site, this would be around 30 k€. Augmented Diagnostics is an efficient approach which aims to make each customer as autonomous as possible. bioMérieux is, as ever, a reliable partner committed to helping its customers grow.
