Global Burden of Bacterial Antimicrobial Resistance in 2019: A Systematic Analysis

SUMMARY

New data from 2019 found at least 1.27 million deaths around the globe are attributable to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) per year. Additionally, an estimated 4.95 million deaths were associated in some way with AMR each year. This is a significant increase compared to a 2016 report by British Member of Parliament and economist Jim O'Neill that previously estimated the number of AMR-related deaths at 700,000 annually.
